Letters to the editor: Lana Lawrence case deserves attention, etc

Lana Lawrence case deserves attention

Posted:  Wednesday, August 28, 2013 10:57 am |  Updated: 2:39 pm, Thu Aug 29, 2013.

I would like to commend The Argus-Press for its reporting on the “Searching for justice” article in Monday’s paper.
I find it hard to believe how shamefully this case was handled by the Shiawassee County justice system.
How can an admission to multiple counts of a first degree criminal sexual conduct crime, with a life imprisonment penalty, end up as a “slap on the wrist” sentence? Did the accused hold something over the prosecution? How else could this happen?
Perhaps a drunken prosecutor in later years is better than we had then.
I would urge our law enforcement community to seek answers to the highly unusual aspects of this case. For example, who had reason and access to tamper with the case file? Maybe a prosecutor who knew he screwed up and didn’t want it to interfere with his future aspirations for judgeship.
The residents of this county, and mostly Lana Lawrence, deserve better.

I too would like to commend The Argus-Press and Lana Lawrence for sharing her story. Obviously no one can turn back the clock for you, Lana, and it’s too late to bring the justice you need through the legal system. Fortunately, there is higher court waiting to judge all those who did you wrong.

Please continue to take advantage of any resources made available to you for your ongoing healing. The same day I read your first article I also received my September Guidepost issue. The article “The Power of Forgiveness” seems to have been written for you. Try to obtain a copy at [link redacted by Lana]. You did not cause these atrocities that happened to you. Know that you have the power and every right to put them behind you. May God bless you.
